congrats! I'm incredibly thrilled that Rebecca is running. BTW - I've been trying every way possible to get in touch with the campaign to volunteer (was unable to make last night's event), but alas have not heard back yet. I'm taking this as a positive that the campaign is being totally inundated with support. Hopefully you'll be able to help organize and harness some grassroots Oakland power!

While the railroad industry is in a cooperative mood, it would be wise for northern California, at the least, to follow Governor Schwarzenneger's suggestion and shore up railroad levies in preparation for increased and sane, inter-metropolitan rail travel. Rail travel can remain above ground or semi-subterranean with common concrete tubular sound and safety barriers prepared in trenches. We have witnessed through natural wonders, the most sustainable place to put forces of traffic is at the bottom of a levy, this being the natural resolution of the causeway. But first, the polluter train has to be engineered to consume gulf stream waters (current).

The future of Oakland relies on its ability to address the government brainwashing cult and the branch of government that it emanates from. This is so apparent in the Mesherle trial where the government led brainwashing cult puts the public through a psychiatric Rorschach test, while the public covets knowledge of the brainwashing cult. This cult is prevalent at Laney College, a prominent education hub in Oakland. It is no coincident the Oscar Grant, relates to LA and College grants. Other prominent locations are Yoshi's Restaurant at Jack London Square, Operation Dignity's House of Dignity near Old Town Oakland. As the nation searches for more money in the economy, I suggest you look closely at this triad.

I agree that leadership is the critical problem, but without a Transportation Commission, there is hardly even the opportunity for leadership. We've got multiple representatives to different agencies, currently completely unstaffed, as well as a confusing bureaucratic and Council-level approach to decision-making. Leadership is difficult if not impossible without the institutional structures to make consistent decisions.

Jim, Futura is my favorite font and I want to take advantage of the opportunity to display something other than the generic Microsoft Type fonts we're generally stuck with. I've used coloring, linespacing, and sizing to make it more legible than it was before, though I understand that Futura is not considered as readable as other typefaces. Unfortunately with the Web what you see is not necessarily the same thing as what other people see, and I think that overall this is very readable as well as cool. You can disable Futura from your computer or create a custom stylesheet that overrides mine if you really hate it.

"A Transportation Commission with real authority would go a long way, but leadership is necessary too."

I'd reverse this: leadership in Oakland is the critical problem, on environment, crime, finance and most of the other challenges we have. Regarding transportation mode change in Oakland, the good ideas have been around for at least 20 years. But there isn't the leadership and civic management here to formulate a long-term policy or to carry it through. Sad.
