Vote for Oakland!

American Express is sponsoring Partners in Preservation awards for the Bay Area. A committee (primarily of San Franciscans), with input from an online poll, will distribute some grant money to worthy historic rehabilitation projects. Several projects will receive funds. We join other local groups, including the Oakland Heritage Alliance, Grand Lake neighborhood groups, and District 2′s council candidates in urging East Bay internet users to vote in this poll. After registering (which requires no personal information beyond an email address), surfers can vote daily. Let’s get this money!

We can’t pass up an election without an endorsement, of course. Please choose the Cleveland Cascade. While the Fox Theater is currently beating it, the Roxy Theater is popular, and so the committee will probably not want to give money to another theater. More importantly, the Fox is fully funded – the Cascade really needs to the money. Using the grant for this unique public stairway would make a huge difference, giving thousands of people daily interaction with a whimsical and beautiful piece of history.
